Three Business Ideas

Three Business Ideas

The following are three brief to briefer business idea outlines.

  1. Create a Khan Academy type website for Computer Science, focusing initially on content for computer science theory such as discrete mathematics and algorithm and data structure theory. khanacademy.org excels at creating engaging content that uses concept videos and exercises in tandem to teach new subjects, especially math. However, this format is inherently less useful for learning practical computer science and software development skills, as bite-sized exercises with a clear answer aren’t as easily created or effective with looser concepts. To take the intersection where there isn’t already excellent content and exercises available online and the subject fits the medium, this business would teach the theory of computer science. The theory side of computer science lends itself well to gamified exercises tied to videos covering each topic. A first iteration of the site could simply consist of providing a nice presentation of sets of problems from an open source discrete math textbook.

  2. Offer freelance front-end web development services. This would involve creating a website to advertise myself as a front-end web developer. The website would point to past work, provide contact info, and eventually show selected reviews from past clients. This business would take no money to begin but would require some background in web development and some time to build out a website and other marketing materials for attracting clients.

  3. Give freelance consultations on how to arrange personal living spaces, from small bedrooms to full apartments and houses. This would go beyond the typical role of an interior designer and focus on working from the current state of someone’s living space toward the individual’s goals for the atmosphere of the space and what activities, feelings, and lifestyle it might facilitate.
