Brian Forth - Visit Reflection

Brian Forth, the founder, president, and brand ambassador of SiteCrafting (SiteCrafting.com), gave a talk to TINST 475. He talked about his experience coming up with an idea for a service he could provide, starting a company, and maintaining the company’s high standards over decades of delivering value to clients.

Brian worked as a teacher before starting SiteCrafting and learned coding independently after work. He saw a need for local companies to increase their online presence and started developing websites for them, eventually turning these side gigs into a full web development company. Early in SiteCrafting’s development, Brian collaborated with coworkers to establish common company values, eventually deciding on “Earn Trust, Teamwork, Get $#!* Done, Dedication, Research, and Stay Curious.” These values established a unique culture with a common vision as SiteCrafting worked for new clients and increased revenue. As a part of preserving company culture, SiteCrafting prioritizes hiring some people right out of college before they’ve had extensive experience working full time in industry. This helps avoid having experienced developers override the company’s preferred development styles or technologies. SiteCrafting also maintains a relatively low and constant employee count at around 50. This overall culture enables them to be nimble enough to continually evolve their knowledge and skills as they meet novel client needs.

The agile team culture established at SiteCrafting gives them an edge in the web development market as they work closely with clients to understand what would work best for them, from the details of the website design to the best cloud services available for hosting.
